When Should my child see the dentist for the first time?

The answer may surprise you! The American Association of Pediatric Dentists recommends that kids see a dentist whenever their first tooth emerges, or when they turn one year old. This may sound early, but routine dental care from a young age has a lot of benefits.

First, it familiarizes your child with the process of seeing the dentist, minimizing anxiety as they grow and continue to see the dentist. Your child will learn more about the importance of dental care, too, and develop great oral hygiene habits that will stick with them for the rest of their lives.

Dr. Morad will also be able to learn more about your child’s oral health and development, answer your questions about dental care as your child grows older, and develop a real relationship with you and your family. Schedule a consultation at the office of Dr. Ghina Morad today or stop by our office.

Frequently Asked Questions

Teeth Cleanings & Oral Exams

+

Children of all ages need to get a teeth cleaning and an oral exam every six months. Teeth cleanings involve scraping away plaque and tartar, buffing the teeth, and flossing them to remove any remaining debris, and help keep your child’s teeth healthy.

Oral exams are usually done after teeth cleanings. Dr. Morad will examine your child’s mouth closely to look for signs of tooth decay and other common pediatric oral health issues, ensuring they have a clean bill of health.

Digital X-Rays

+

We offer digital x-rays for kids at our office. Digital x-rays provide superior results and minimize radiation exposure. However, they are typically not required until your child is 3+ years old. After this, x-rays will usually be taken yearly to track their oral health and development.

Fluoride Treatments

+

Fluoride treatments are usually done as part of your child’s teeth cleaning. In this procedure, Dr. Morad will apply a layer of fluoride-rich liquid onto your child’s teeth. Fluoride attracts minerals to the teeth, strengthening them and reducing the risk of tooth decay.

Dental Sealants

+

Dental sealants are a good way to prevent cavities, particularly in the rear adult molars. In this process, Dr. Morad applies a thin layer of liquid resin to your child’s rear teeth, then hardens it with UV light.

The result is a transparent, strong, durable barrier that prevents cavities. Bacteria, acid, and food particles can’t contact the tooth directly, and this eliminates the risk of tooth decay completely. Sealants usually last up to 5 years or longer with proper application.
